The 2026 humpback whale watching season is currently in full swing in Costa Rica’s warm waters. Every year between July and October (peaking between August and September), humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) migrate from the cold waters of the Southern Hemisphere to breed, give birth, and nurse their calves.

In addition to these majestic whales, boat tours along the coast allow visitors to spot dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays, and a rich diversity of coastal birds.

1. Departures from Marina Pez Vela (Quepos)

This is the main departure point for most boat tours in the area. Catamarans, private yachts, and local vessels depart daily from this modern marina to sail along the coastline of Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park.

2. Marino Ballena National Park (Uvita)

Located about an hour drive south of Quepos, this national park is the country’s sanctuary for marine mammal observation and conservation. Many agencies offer combined tours with hotel pickup in Manuel Antonio, taking guests directly to Uvita to board near the famous whale tail-shaped beach formation.

During the trip, the Pacific marine life frequently delights travelers:

  Dolphins: Pods of bottlenose (Tursiops truncatus) and spotted dolphins (Stenella attenuata) often swim alongside boats, putting on acrobatic displays.

  Sea turtles: Olive ridley and hawksbill turtles can frequently be seen swimming near the surface.

  Seabirds: Brown boobies, brown pelicans, and magnificent frigatebirds nesting on the rocky islets surrounding the park.
