The buzzy books–and the buzzy book reviews–are coming in hot this month. Since March is Women’s History Month, I’ve rounded up four noteworthy titles by women authors to recommend to your patrons.

The Last of Earth book cover

The Last of Earth – Deepa Anappara

Balram is an Indian schoolteacher who was hired by the British in 1869 to lead a dangerous search-and-rescue mission in Tibet, a region closed to European travelers. Katherine is a 50-year-old British woman in disguise, determined to be the first woman to reach Lhasa, the capital. As their paths cross, the two of them will face physical and mental dangers unlike anything they’ve ever experienced as they struggle to survive.

 Fiction by Allegra Goodman

This Is Not About Us – Allegra Goodman

After the death of their sister Jeanne, Sylvia and Helen find themselves on opposite sides of a family feud that lasts for years. Neither their children nor their grandchildren want to get involved. But amid the strained family dynamics and estranged relationships, there are poignant moments of love and grace. This is a nonlinear family saga that reads almost like a short story collection rather than a traditional novel.

Kin – Tayari Jones

The author of An American Marriage returns with a new novel that explores the complexities of family, motherhood, and female friendship between two Black women in the American South. Vernice and Annie have been best friends since early childhood, drawn together by proximity and the fact that both are without mothers. However, their lives take decidedly different paths when Vernice goes to college, joins a community of well-positioned Black women, and marries into an affluent family. At the same time, Annie embarks on a difficult journey to fill the void left by her mother. This is also Oprah’s latest selection for her book club.

A Hymn to Life: Shame Has To Change Sides – Gisèle Pelicot

Content warning: this book deals with sexual assault. Gisèle Pelicot’s name became known worldwide when she waived her right to anonymity in the legal fight against her ex-husband. He had been drugging her and sexually assaulting her for almost a decade, and 50 other men participated in the assault. For the first time, Pelicot tells her story with grace, defiance, and hope.
