It's not easy to feel affluent in America right now. Two-thirds (67%) of Americans surveyed by YouGov for CBS News (1) said they were "stressed" about their personal finances. More than half (55%) said their financial condition was worsening in 2026, the highest level since Gallup (2)started tracking it in 2001.

Nevertheless, amidst all the ongoing economic anxiety, your financial situation could actually be better than you think. In fact, you could be upper-middle class without even knowing it. Here are the five clearest signs that you've made it to the top.

Must Read

1. You earn nearly double the median income

There's no standard, universal measure of the middle class. However, Pew Research (3) has a clear definition for its research methodology: incomes ranging from two-thirds to double the U.S. median household income.

Based on the most recent 2022 Census data, Pew suggests this range could be from $56,600 to $169,800. If you're closer to the upper end of that spectrum, you're upper-middle class.

2. Emergencies don't transform into debt

A staggeringly high number of Americans are completely unprepared for unexpected emergencies. According to Empower, (4) 37% can't cover a $400 sudden expense. About 21% have no emergency savings at all and the median amount set aside for such emergencies is $600 across the population.

With no safety net, millions of Americans turn to debt in the form of personal loans, payday loans or credit cards to bridge the gap. In other words, every emergency turns into debt. If you can avoid this trap, you're in the upper end of the middle class.

If you already have a huge debt burden weighing you down, consolidation could be one way to make it more manageable. Consolidating all your debts into a personal loan through Credible is an effective way to get rid of your debt faster. Instead of juggling multiple monthly payments, you'll have one predictable payment to manage each month.
