At least five people died and others were injured in a massive fire which broke out in the wee hours on Thursday (June 4, 2026) at a Muzaffarpur hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in north Bihar.

The death count is expected to go up. The fire broke out at fifth floor of the Prasad Hospital in Muzaffarpur district at 3:55 a.m..

Four of the deceased in the fire incident have been identified as: Krishnandann Prasad Singh, 76, Geeta Devi, 63, Uday Kumar, 57 and Sashank, 30, three of them were from Muzaffarpur district while Uday Kumar was from neighbouring district of Sheohar.

There were 24 patients admitted in the hospital located at Brahmpuran area of Muzaffarpur town, and 13 of them were in the ICU where the fire broke out on Thursday (June 4, 2026).

“We received an emergency call at around 3:55 a.m., and a team was rushed to operate rescue efforts there. Around 15 people, mostly admitted patients, were evacuated from the ICU of the hospital”, said Ram Niwas Pandey, an official from the fire department of Muzaffarpur while, adding, the “other patients have been shifted to nearby hospitals”.

The fire servicemen later controlled the inferno and brought the situation under control.

Though the cause of the incident was yet to be ascertained, the primary reports suggest that a short circuit was the reason for the fire to break out.

“After the inquiry report, appropriate action will be taken against those found guilty for the incident”, Muzaffarpur District Magistrate Subrat Kumar Sen said.

“We’ve recorded statements from the family members of the patients admitted at the hospital”, the DM Mr. Sen told media persons.

Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has expressed grief and sorrow over the incident. State Health Minister Nishant Kumar has spoken to the District Magistrate of Muzaffarpur and was apprised about details of the incident.

The Bihar government has also announced ₹4 lakh as ex gratia in the incident to family members of every victims.

DM Subrat Kumar Sen is still at the hospital along with officials. A probe has been ordered into it, officials said.

Earlier on June 3, at least 21 people had died, and several others were injured and hospitalised in a massive fire which had broken out in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area.
