A24 has released the first trailer for Adam Wingard’s upcoming blood-filled, action-horror film Onslaught.

The film follows an army sniper who must stop at nothing to protect her daughter from a rogue squad of genetically engineered super soldiers, causing destruction anywhere in their path, after they break loose in the desert. The film stars Adria Arjona as the mother who is protecting her daughter, as well as MMA fighter Alex Pereira as ‘The Butcher’, presumably the leader of the antagonistic super soldiers.

In the trailer, we also see a blonde Drew Starkey portraying a government figure attempting to stop the soldiers, as well as Rebecca Hall as another leading character, advising Starkey on how they can be stopped. Whilst we never see him in this trailer, Dan Stevens has reunited with Wingard for this project too. Eric Wareheim, Reginald VelJohnson and Michael Biehn are also a part of the cast.

Onslaught marks Wingard’s move away from franchise filmmaking, with two of the Monsterverse films, Godzilla x Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, serving as the only films he’s produced so far this decade. The American director is otherwise known for The Guest – starring Stevens – and the 2011 horror-thriller You’re Next. Could this film serve as a return to roots for Adam?

The film hasn’t got a confirmed UK release date as of yet, but it is set to hit US cinemas on 4 September. With horror films already taking over the box office this year so far, this genre hybrid could serve as a different kind of hit for audiences looking for something more explosive.

Onslaught hits US cinemas on September 4th; a UK release date is TBC.
