The AFL has confirmed the future of State of Origin, with Western Australia to host South Australia in 2027.

South Australia will then host Victoria in 2028 at Adelaide Oval, before Victoria and Western Australia meet again in Perth in 2029.

The State of Origin concept returned to the AFL in 2026, with Victoria beating Western Australia at a sold out Perth Stadium.

South Australia and Western Australia last played each other in 1998 at Football Park, with South Australia winning by 36 points in front of 18,000 fans.

AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon said the success of Origin's return earlier this year showed the event could go on to get bigger and better.

"No one really knew what the game was going to be like, and what we saw was actually footy at its finest, the ball moved around … it was a quick game, lots of scoring, so I think what we'll see is there'll be a different build-up for the players," he said.

"State football is one of the great traditions of our game, and we are pleased to see it continue in 2027 and beyond after the huge success of its return earlier this year which saw more than 58,000 people fill [Perth] Stadium in Perth.

"Locking in the structure for the next three years provides fans, clubs, players and stakeholders certainty on Origin, allowing them to embrace the state rivalry and celebrate our great game."

WA ready to resume SA rivalry

WA Origin chair of selectors and former player Glen Jakovich said the state had a similarly strong rivalry with South Australia as there was with Victoria.

"Same reason, they think they're better than us," Jakovich said.

"The South Australians, they don't leave the welcome mat out for you, so I've got to return the favour.

"I've got up to six or seven months to start planning the demise of South Australia."

Jakovich said this year's clash with Victoria had showed just how much it meant to the players to represent their states.

"Led by Patrick Cripps … at his age, two Brownlow Medals, achieved a lot in football, and he put it right up there as one of the pinnacles of his career," he said.

"He led the state with such great honour, so I look forward to that happening again. It's a great privilege."

Political football

WA Premier Roger Cook has challenged his South Australian counterpart Peter Malinauskas to a bet on the outcome of next year's game.

"I reckon the loser needs to provide a carton of quality beer from their state to the other, so I'm very much looking forward to getting a carton … from Mali any day after the match," he said.

No other states have been marked to play in the Origin series, with the Allies concept — Tasmania, New South Wales, Queensland, ACT, and Northern Territory merged together — last used in 1998.

New South Wales joined with ACT and Queensland joined with the Northern Territory in 1993, with Tasmania fielding a standalone team.
