Arne Slot has come under huge pressure at Liverpool after a disappointing Premier League title defence

Liverpool manager Arne Slot believes he can turn things around at Anfield after a disappointing campaign. The Reds were some way off the imperious level they set during the 2024-25 campaign which saw them crowned Premier League champions.

Slot has come under huge pressure after 19 defeats in all competitions this season, with Liverpool only qualifying for the Champions League on the final day of the season. Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) made the decision to stick with Slot despite calls for the sack, avoiding disaster in securing a return to Europe's elite competition.

However, the pressure has not gone away and there are still murmurings about his future. Chelsea's move to appoint Xabi Alonso as the Blues' new manager removes one avenue the Reds could have explored, with Slot now looking to the transfer window to address this season's problems.

The Telegraph reports that the Dutch coach feels he can fix things after speaking of the need for the Reds to sign at least one winger in the summer transfer window in an attempt to replace the outgoing Mohamed Salah and said: "One of the reasons why everyone is talking about wingers is because Mo is leaving.

"It makes complete sense to think about at least one. I think last season gives you the answer because of how important our wingers were to our success last season.

"They were scoring goals, providing goals, so they were a vital part of us winning the league last season and, in general in football, you see more and more focus on wingers."

Slot admitted his side did not bring the same level as they did during their title winning campaign, and nor did he. He said: "Last season, one of the reasons why we were so difficult to play against was because we had threats over on the right side, on the left side.

"It was not only the wingers, it is the combination between the winger and the full-back. Last season I think if you had to describe the style of play I would describe it as very reliant on the winger-full-back combinations.

"We have tried that this season again but there hasn’t been the end product that we had last season. That is not to say it is only about them. We all – me included – didn’t bring the same level."

The report also claims that Slot turned down the chance to return to the Netherlands when Ajax made an approach to offer him the manager's job midway through last season. Slot is intent on succeeding at Anfield and the Reds hierarchy have stuck by their man thus far.

The Reds know they have to replace talisman Salah this summer, though he too suffered a disappointing dip in form last season. Yan Diomande, Bradley Barcola and Anthony Gordon have all been linked with a move to Liverpool this summer and Slot's comments certainly suggest the Reds will bring in at least one winger ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
