International sales from raw barley exports from all supplier countries totaled US$8.87 billion in 2025.

The overall value of barley exports retreated by an average -17.3% for all exporting countries since 2021 when total barley shipments were valued at $10.7 billion.

Exports of barley sold on international markets in 2025 flatlined via a -0.3% reduction starting from $8.9 billion in 2024.

Barley is a traditional food ingredient used in soups, stews, breads and beverages. More recently, this major cereal grain has become a staple component for health foods. Barley is also used to ferment malt beer. A member of the grass family, barley has an additional food use serving as animal fodder.

The 5 biggest exporters of barley are Australia, France, Argentina, Germany and Romania. Combined, those 5 major suppliers approached two-thirds (64.6%) of all exported barley by sales during 2025. Such a high percentage indicates a relatively concentrated cohort of international barley suppliers.

Applying a continental lens, suppliers in Europe sold the highest dollar worth of exported barley during 2025 with shipments valued at $4.63 billion over half (52.2%) of total barley exports.

In second place were exporters in Oceania (24.6%) Australia and, to a much lesser degree, New Zealand, ahead of Latin America plus the Caribbean (9.1%) and North America (7.3%).

Smaller percentages came from providers in Asia (6.6%) and Africa (0.2%).

For research purposes, the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix for raw barley is 1003 (which is the focus of this analysis). Please note that the HTS codes for rolled, flaked, pearled or otherwise worked barley are scattered under 6-digit subgroups attached to a 1104 prefix.
