What Happened

Brazil attracted US$11.3 billion in net foreign direct investment in September 2026, the Central Bank of Brazil reported on Monday, October 26, 2026. The inflow was up from US$9.6 billion in September 2025 and from US$7.4 billion in August 2026, according to the bank’s external sector note.

Equity participation made up US$8.1 billion of the total, split between US$4.3 billion in new capital and US$3.8 billion in reinvested earnings. Intercompany operations, which are loans and transfers between companies of the same group, added US$3.2 billion.

Over the 12 months through September, direct investment totaled US$88.3 billion, equal to 3.43% of gross domestic product. A month earlier the 12-month total stood at US$86.6 billion, or 3.39% of GDP.

Foreign portfolio investment moved the other way, with net outflows of US$2.1 billion in September. Brazil’s international reserves stood at US$362.8 billion at the end of the month.

Why It Matters

Direct investment is money that foreign companies commit to factories, stakes and operations in Brazil, and it tends to stay for years. Portfolio flows, by contrast, can leave within days when investors change their mind.

The September inflow arrived in the same release as Brazil’s balance with the rest of the world. Our report on the current account deficit covers that side of the release, and our August investment report covers the month before.

What It Means for You

For a US company or investor with exposure to Brazil, the figures show that long-term corporate money kept flowing in while financial investors pulled back from stocks and bonds. Direct investment is the steadier of the two signals, but one month does not make a trend.

About US$7 billion of the September total came from reinvested earnings and intercompany lending rather than fresh outside capital. That mix is common in the Central Bank’s accounts, yet it means the headline number is not all new money arriving from abroad.

What Is Not Known

The Central Bank’s note does not break the September inflow down by sector or by country of origin. It is therefore unclear which industries or which foreign investors drove the result.

It is also unclear how much of the intercompany lending is new financing and how much is a refinancing inside corporate groups. Monthly figures are often revised, and the note does not say whether this one will be.
