Several of these districts are among the most densely populated in Buenos Aires. Palermo, Belgrano and Recoleta are also where many foreign residents, embassies and international firms are based.
What Caused It
Edesur said the interruption was due to a failure in the system outside the company, TN reported. Data from ENRE, the national electricity regulator, showed that the cut began in Edenor’s area and then reached Edesur’s.
Xinhua reported that the outage hit mainly the northern part of Greater Buenos Aires. No report identified the substation or transmission line involved.
A failure outside a distributor’s own network usually points to high-voltage transmission. That distinction matters, because it decides which company answers to the regulator.
Who Runs the Grid
Argentina’s high-voltage lines are operated mainly by Transener, while the wholesale market company Cammesa dispatches power across the national system. The distributors take over at the local level and deliver electricity to homes and businesses.
Edenor has been controlled since 2023 by a group of local businessmen, including José Luis Manzano, Daniel Vila and Mauricio Filiberti. Edesur is majority-owned by Enel, the Italian utility.
When a fault starts upstream of the distributors, responsibility can fall on the transmission operator instead. Edesur’s statement placed the fault outside its own network without saying where.
Chaos on the Streets
Dead traffic lights caused chaos at intersections, TN reported, and videos showed whole blocks without light. The cut came on a Saturday evening, when restaurants and streets are busiest.
Buenos Aires city has about three million residents, and the wider metropolitan area about 15 million. A cut on this scale can reach lifts, water pumps and mobile phone masts as well as homes.

Large outages have hit the Buenos Aires area repeatedly in recent summers, usually during heatwaves. A major failure in a mild September evening, with demand far below its peak, will draw closer questions.
President Javier Milei‘s government has sharply raised electricity tariffs since 2024 while cutting subsidies. Consumers paying more will expect a more reliable service in return.
For the distributors, big outages can bring fines and compensation payments to customers, set by the regulator. No penalty for Saturday’s blackout had been announced by Sunday.
