Canadian officials are gathering in Windsor, Ont., today to celebrate the opening of the Gordie Howe bridge, which crosses over the Detroit River, connecting Canada and the U.S. Despite this being a cross-border bridge, Canada and the United States will not be celebrating the opening together, after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened Canada with new tariffs of up to 50 per cent Monday. Canada has spent $6.4 billion to build the bridge, which was entirely funded by Canadian taxpayers, with Prime Minister Mark Carney telling reporters on July 16 that “splitting of tolls, any sharing of the toll, won’t happen until all of the debt is repaid.” The agreement released by the federal government contradicts this statement, outlining that for the first 15 years, Canada will split revenue 50/50 with the U.S. The bridge is set to open on July 27, after several months of delays, and will generate revenue mainly from drivers paying a toll to cross it.
