Altitude will release the winner of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival Best Director Award, the Spanish film La Bola Negra, in UK and Irish cinemas on 6th November.

Translated as ‘The Black Ball’, the film follows the story “of three men whose lives are intimately connected through desire, pain and inheritance, across three different eras – 1932, 1937 and 2017. Rich with Lorca’s poetry and suffused with desire, grief and hope, it is an intimate love story and a sweeping exploration of memory, inheritance and queer history, honouring those whose lives and loves were too often forced into silence.”

The film is written, directed and co-produced by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, whose other works include 2020’s Veneno and 2017’s Holy Camp! One of the highlights of the cast is acclaimed musician Guitarricadelafuente, who makes his feature film debut. Penélope Cruz, Glenn Close, Miguel Bernardeau, Lola Dueñas, and Carlos González, also star in the film.

La Bola Negra is described as “A sweeping, emotionally charged story of love, memory and inheritance spanning three generations”. It is also “inspired by the unfinished final work of Federico García Lorca and the acclaimed play by Alberto Conejero, one of Spain’s foremost contemporary playwrights. Blending history, poetry and passionate romance, it is a visually ravishing, fearless exploration of queer identity and the lives erased by history – and those determined to reclaim them.”

La Bola Negra will be released in UK and Irish cinemas on 6th November 2026.
