Prime Minister Mark Carney said Sunday that Canada is in “mourning” following a deadly explosion and fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright that resulted in multiple deaths and left dozens of people injured. Carney confirmed that four service members were killed in the tragic incident on Saturday evening, while other sources Global News had spoken with indicated that at least seven people had died. The prime minister said that flags at all federal buildings would be flown at half-mast to honour those who were injured and lost their lives. He went on to say that the federal government would “care for the injured through every step of their recovery.” A preliminary investigation into the deadly fire at CFB Wainwright suggests a munition from a live training exercise sparked a fast-moving grass fire, which caused Saturday's explosion, according to multiple military sources.
