Minister of National Defence David McGuinty, Emergency Management Minister Eleanor Olszewski and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith will provide an update Sunday in the aftermath of a deadly explosion and fire at a Canadian military base. The explosion at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright was caused by a gas line or gas well being struck during a live-fire training exercise on the base on Saturday around 4 p.m. MT, multiple Canadian Armed Forces sources told Global News. It ignited a fire that, fuelled by high winds, spread rapidly beyond the boundaries of the training area. Separate military sources told Global News that at least seven people died in the incident, and dozens more were injured at the base, located about 200 kilometres from Edmonton. Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed Sunday that four service members had perished and their next of kin were notified.
