Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have made a significant change to their coaching setup ahead of IPL 2027 as the five-time champions look to rebuild following a difficult campaign in the previous season. The franchise has now brought in a former India international with extensive IPL experience to take charge of the team, following the departure of a long-serving head coach.

CSK appoint Zaheer Khan as head coach

CSK have announced former India left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan as their new head coach for IPL 2027. He takes over from Stephen Fleming, who brought an end to his remarkable 18-year association with the franchise before moving into a new role with England cricket. Fleming was appointed England‘s men’s Test head coach in July.

Zaheer arrives at CSK with considerable experience both on and off the field. The former fast bowler played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals during his IPL career before retiring from the league in 2017.

Following his playing career, Zaheer moved into various leadership and mentoring positions. He became Mumbai Indians’ Director of Cricket Operations ahead of the 2019 IPL season and later took up the role of head of global development. He was also appointed mentor of Lucknow Super Giants for IPL 2025, although he left the franchise before the following season.

Zaheer brings extensive playing and mentoring experience

Zaheer played 100 IPL matches and finished his career with 102 wickets at an average of 27.27. His international career was even more distinguished, with the left-armer claiming 610 wickets across formats for India. Speaking about his appointment, Zaheer said it was an honour to join one of the most successful franchises in IPL history. He also reflected on facing CSK during his playing days and highlighted the special atmosphere created by the team’s supporters at Chepauk.

“It’s an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL. The atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk make it even more special. I can’t wait to join the legacy franchise with such a rich history,” said Zaheer in a statement.

CSK look to rebuild after difficult IPL 2026 campaign

The appointment comes after CSK endured another challenging IPL season in 2026. Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, the franchise finished outside the playoff positions after recording six victories and eight defeats from their 14 matches. Their 12-point tally meant they missed the playoffs for the third successive season.

With a new head coach now in place, CSK will enter IPL 2027 looking to make a fresh start. Managing Director KS Viswanathan described Zaheer as a world-class bowler and praised his work with young fast bowlers, while also highlighting his contribution to India’s success during the 2000s.

The franchise will hope Zaheer’s coaching and mentoring experience can help strengthen its core and guide CSK back into contention in the upcoming IPL season.
