A child is among the four people killed in a crash involving a vehicle that police say was driving the wrong way along Stoney Trail Sunday night.

It happened around 11 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the highway, near the Tsuut’ina Parkway. That’s when police believe a 2011 Mercedes Benz C350 being driven by a 30-year-old man who was travelling southbound in the northbound lanes collided with an on coming 2016 Subaru Impreza.

“On arrival units found that there was two cars engulfed in flames and one other car that was severely damaged,” said Staff Sgt. Andy Woodward with the Calgary police.

In a release, Calgary Fire said upon arrival, crews “immediately initiated an aggressive fire attack while simultaneously conducting rapid searches of the involved vehicles and providing emergency care to those who could be reached.”

All three occupants of the Mercedes including a woman and child were pronounced dead at the scene along with the a 43-year-old man who was sole occupant of the Subaru.

Police said a Chevy Equinox being driven by a 52-year-old woman also struck the Mercedes. She and three youths were all taken to hospital where they remain. Police added one of the occupants has suffered a life-altering injury, but is in non-life threatening condition.

Police are considering speed and impairment as factors in the crash, but they won’t know for sure until an autopsy is completed sometime this week.

There were calls to 911 reporting that a vehicle had been driving the wrong way along Stoney Trail just minutes before the crash, police confirmed.

“That vehicle was a white or silver vehicle and one of the vehicles involved in the collision was a silver vehicle,” said Woodward.

“Trying to get ahead of it is very very difficult, you would have to have a police vehicle in the right location in the right time and that just didn’t happen.”
