In a small zoo near Gaza’s Nuseirat refugee camp, children found a rare moment of joy as they watched a listless lion, chimpanzees and parrots behind bars. Many of the animals are malnourished and weakened by shortages of food, medicine and vaccines, but remain alive thanks to the efforts of zoo owner Mahmoud Gomaa. Gomaa originally ran the zoo in Rafah but fled in 2024 when Israeli troops attacked, moving the surviving animals from town to town before reopening in Nuseirat earlier this year. He said he prioritized saving the animals over his own safety during the war. Veterinarians warn that feeding frozen meat to carnivores is harmful, while experts note that constant bombing causes severe stress for the animals. Some creatures, including lions, crocodiles and ostriches, were left behind and later found dead or missing.
