Injured Humboldt penguins in Chile are fitted with recovery vests designed to protect wounds and prevent them from damaging stitches as they heal.
Care in the community has a very particular meaning for penguins in Chile. Injured Humboldt penguins are being fitted with specially designed recovery vests to protect wounds as they heal.

The footage shows handlers checking and measuring the fit, while penguins at a rescue centre walk and rest by a pool wearing the vests.
The short-term vests are designed to stop penguins from pecking at wounds or pulling out stitches. Their fabric contains copper and zinc, which can help limit the growth of bacteria and fungi while supporting the healing process.
The project remains experimental, with the design adapted to the birds' size and shape. Early trials suggest the penguins tolerate the vests well, and the garments appear to protect wounds during recovery.
