Chinese military-linked researchers reportedly used outputs from advanced American AI models to help train specialised domestic systems for defence and security applications. A Reuters review of more than eighty Chinese academic papers and patents found examples involving model distillation, cybersecurity, software analysis, monitoring and unmanned platforms. The technique allows capabilities from larger AI systems to be transferred into smaller models that can operate with fewer computing resources. Some projects explored applications involving drones, maritime operations and target recognition, raising new questions about proprietary AI capabilities and national security.
