This critical global debate is officially coming to Central America for the very first time. From July 27th to August 1st, the University of Costa Rica (UCR) will play host to PLEA 2026 (Passive and Low Energy Architecture), widely regarded as the most prestigious international congress dedicated to sustainable architecture.
According to Michael Smith and Emily Vargas, members of the local organizing committee, accelerating climate shifts mean the industry must rapidly abandon construction models that depend excessively on artificial lighting, continuous air conditioning, and massive energy grids.

The event organizers emphasize that many answers to modern climate challenges are already woven into traditional Costa Rican architecture, particularly within structures built during the early 20th century.
In industrial and agricultural towns of the 1940s, housing designs naturally featured deep protective eaves and optimized cross-ventilation tailored precisely to handle tropical environments without advanced electronics. Rather than treating green architecture as an exercise in adding expensive solar panels or wind turbines to standard blueprints, the congress advocates for simple, contextual designs that meet human needs naturally.
By analyzing ancestral and vernacular techniques, researchers aim to extract scalable strategies that can be integrated seamlessly into modern, high-density urban development. The ultimate goal is to shift sustainable architecture from being a novel, premium option into the baseline industry standard for all future construction projects.
Global Thinkers, Local Solutions
PLEA 2026 will bring together professionals spanning more than 40 countries, showcasing over 200 research presentations from top-tier global universities. The speaker lineup features heavily influential figures pioneering raw-material and passive design strategies:
- Anna Heringer (Germany): Globally acclaimed for her master structures utilizing sustainable bamboo and rammed earth techniques.
- Gabriela Carrillo (Mexico): Recognized widely as one of the most influential architectural voices in Latin America.

Alongside these international perspectives, the congress maintains a practical, local focus. Delegates will study community projects directly inside Costa Rican micro-climates—such as Quebrada Los Negritos and Río Torres—to observe real-world solutions adapted specifically to local social and geographic conditions.
