Comic Relief raised a huge amount of money for charity

Comic Relief has raised a jaw-dropping £30,004,040 on Red Nose Day following a 1,000km cycling challenge from Greg James and a series of sketches about hit shows such as The Traitors and Amandaland. Davina McCall said: "The total raised tonight is a whopping £30,004,040. Thank you so, so much and thank you for your incredible generosity."

Last year, the charity was able to raise £32 million. It was a record-breaking figure for Comic Relief, which was celebrating it's 40th anniversary of raising money to fight poverty in the UK and abroad.

The annual charity fundraiser was hosted at Salford's MediaCity, helmed by Davina McCall. The TV personality was joined by comedy legends Joel Dommett, Katherine Ryan, Nick Mohammed and Catherine Tate as Nan from her hit sketch show The Catherine Tate Show.

It also showed sketches including The Traitors: The Movie sequel where stars like Iain Stirling, Vicky Pattinson and Alison Steadman as this year's contestants. There was also a sketch based on the comedy show Amandaland, in which Lucy Punch's Amanda Hughes was joined by several famous Amandas, including Amanda Holden and Corrie's Amanda Barrie.

The public was able to donate throughout the Comic Relief: Funny For Money, which was broadcast on BBC One, iPlayer and the BBC's official YouTube channel from 7pm until 10pm on 20 March.

The proceeds raised by the show will help the charity tackle poverty by providing food, healthcare and shelter for people in the UK and around the world.

Prior to the broadcast, over £4 million was already added to the pot through Greg James' cycling challenge. Greg James completed Radio 1's Longest Ride after cycling 1,000km across eight days.

The epic fundraiser saw him be surprised by friends, family, and even Prince William along the way, but the radio star reached the finish line shortly after 10:35am at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh on Red Nose Day.

Greg was greeted by crowds of cheering people and the sound of bagpipes as he entered the stadium. He admitted to cameras that he "kept bursting into tears" when he saw people waving at him from the sidelines and added that though it was a "stupid idea", it felt "amazing" to have raised so much money.

He later said: "I just tried to push through the pain to get to that joy, and there was so much joy on that whole journey. It was long, and it was deliberately stupid to make a lot of noise for Comic Relief. But there was so much joy on that roadside, so many amazing people. I will never, ever forget it."

The full amount will be revealed to the public on Greg's breakfast show on Monday 23 March. He raised over £4million. One of the biggest donors was the band Coldplay, who added £100,000 to the pot. A matched donation was made by The Hunter Foundation, a Scottish philanthropic organisation.

Greg's journey was filled with amazing moments, including a Red Arrows flyover and a stretch where he was joined by a convoy of leather-clad motorcyclists. As he removed his helmet in Scotland, Greg said: "It's been such a struggle at times, some of that. But, everyone has got me through all of it. The Radio 1 lot have got me through it and every smiling face, aside from the pain and the legs that are barely working."

The crowd at Murrayfield began to chant Greg's name, and he concluded: "Wave at people, be good to people and if you can make someone's day, you should, because it has been the biggest privilege to do this."
