Lando Norris delivered when it mattered most in Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying, putting his McLaren at the top of the timing screens on Saturday to claim his first Formula 1 pole position of the season.

The reigning world champion produced a superb final lap of 1m 17.207s around the Hungaroring, edging Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton by the slimmest of margins — just 0.012 seconds — in a tense fight for pole.

Hamilton had initially secured a front-row starting spot, but his qualifying result was later compromised when stewards issued him a three-place grid penalty for impeding McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. The decision pushed the Ferrari driver back to fifth for the race start.

With Hamilton demoted, Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc was promoted to second on the Hungarian Grand Prix grid. Piastri moves up to third, while Red Bull’s Max Verstappen will line up fourth after originally qualifying sixth.

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli was also hit with a three-place grid drop after stewards ruled he failed to slow sufficiently under yellow flags, which were brought out when Verstappen spun at the final corner.

The Italian youngster lost his original fourth place to start seventh on the grid behind his Mercedes teammate George Russell.

Isack Hadjar qualified eighth for Red Bull, with Arvid Lindblad of Racing Bulls and Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg rounding out the top 10 qualifiers.
