Tracy Barlow was rushed to hospital on Thursday night's episode of Coronation Street. The legendary character, who has been played by Kate Ford since 2002, is not short of enemies in Weatherfield, the latest of which is Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney).
Cassie was introduced when bosses of the long-running soap decided to completely rewrite history and install her as the long-lost biological mum of Tyrone Dobbs, and initially came to blows with Tracy when she set about poisoning Ken for financial gain. With all that swept under the carpet, now Tracy has sparked a romance with Ross, who is Tyrone's long-lost biological dad.
Initially, only Cassie and Ross know the truth - that he got her pregnant when she was underage and working as a prostitute to fund her drug habit. Tracy has since found this out, and much to Cassie's dismay, she decided to forgiven him for his actions that took place decades ago. She told her: "We all make mistakes, Cassie. And unfortunately, you were his. Anyway, we're gonna make a go of it so I just think we need to move on."
It was then that Cassie shot back: "Fair enough. It's your funeral." Later on, Ross, who has become the latest in a long line of villains to have rocked up in Weatherfield lately, pinned Cassie up against a wall outside on the street and threatened to kill her if she ever came between him and Tyrone again.
Cassie then learned that Ross had to take a drugs test for his new job as a a guard at the local prison, where Sarah Platt is currently behind bars for murder, and set about seizing her chance to get rid of him for good. She crushed up some of Tyrone’s painkillers and planned to spike his drink with him, but unfortunately, Ross knew exactly what she was doing.
Proving that he doesn't really love Tracy at all, Ross spiked her drink later on with the crushed painkillers and a short time later, she collapsed in front of daughter Amy, who immediately called an ambulance.
Outside on the street, residents gathered in disbelief and Amy insisted on going to the hospital with her mother. As the ambulance drove off, viewers were left wondering what was next for Tracy.
The long-serving character was born on-screen in 1977 to Deirdre and Ray Langton, and was later adopted by Ken. As well as a carrying out a string of affairs and feuds over the years, most notably, Tracy was jailed after she murdered Charlie Stubbs in 2007 but managed to get off on a technicality and has been a fixture on the programme since making her return in 2010.
Fans instantly took to social media after realising the extent of Ross' evil ways, and wondered what this could mean for Cassie ahead of her upcoming exit.
One said: "Ross better not go kill Cassie now." Another said: "Was expecting Cassie to be smarter than that, she should have just crushed the pills at Tyrone’s house and then went over to Ken to slip it in Ross’s cup!"
A third wrote: "But looks like Cassie will be murdered by Ross, yet another nasty character to set up home on the cobbles. Like we don't already have more than enough villains in."
Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITV X. *
