CARTAGO, COSTA RICA — Marcel Arrieta Fonseca, a 21-year-old Biotechnology Engineering student at the Tecnológico de Costa Rica (TEC), has captured international acclaim by participating on the winning team of the prestigious iGEM Startups BioHackathon. This global competition serves as a premier launching pad for cutting-edge solutions rooted in synthetic biology, tasking scientific minds with moving theoretical concepts out of academic halls and into real-world applications.

Hailing from Birrisito de Paraíso, Arrieta collaborated within an elite, cross-border alliance named Team BOREALIS, working alongside dedicated biotechnology students from Mexico and Bolivia. The multinational cohort clinched the coveted “Judge’s Choice” distinction, a reward recognizing outstanding innovation, scientific vigor, and clear entrepreneurial viability. Their winning proposal directly addresses Lyme disease, an increasingly prevalent and notoriously difficult-to-diagnose tick-borne bacterial infection.

The Science: Synthetic Biology vs. Diagnostic Blind Spots

Lyme disease is triggered by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, transmitted to humans via infected blacklegged ticks. If left undetected, it can cause debilitating long-term neurological, joint, and cardiac complications. A primary bottleneck in managing the disease worldwide is the severe limitation of standard medical screenings.

“Current detection systems have a staggering error rate of around 40% to 60%,” Arrieta explained, emphasizing the critical diagnostic vulnerability patients face today. “With our project, we engineered a system based on synthetic receptors capable of accurately detecting the presence of the bacteria and precisely identifying the specific stage of the infection.”

The solution designed by Team BOREALIS bypasses unreliable secondary antibody screenings. Instead, the team proposed an elegant mechanism utilizing cellular engineering. By modifying cells to harbor highly specialized synthetic receptors, the system can bind directly with Borrelia burgdorferi. Upon binding, the engineered cellular platform triggers an unmistakable visual signal, allowing clinicians to rapidly, visually confirm whether a patient is infected and how far the disease has progressed.

From Laboratory Bench to Market Implementation

What set the iGEM Startups BioHackathon apart from typical scientific symposia was its rigorous dual-lens evaluation framework. Submissions were not merely judged on theoretical biology, but heavily weighted on structural viability as a scalable startup business. Panel experts scrutinized how well the platform could transition into functional diagnostic kits that could be deployed globally, providing massive societal impacts outside of purely academic circles.

  • Diagnostic Innovation: Bypasses standard delayed immune-response windows, utilizing target-specific synthetic biology to yield real-time visual readings directly from sample interactions.
  • Global Scalability: Designed with market viability in mind, the modular diagnostic architecture can be mass-produced efficiently, addressing a critical medical void in tick-endemic regions.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Central American Scientists

For Arrieta, this international milestone is more than just a personal or academic achievement; it stands as an undeniable proof of concept for the scientific potential emerging out of Central America. He hopes his path serves as an encouraging catalyst for incoming university students considering futures in STEM fields.

“Four years ago, I dreamed of being the scientist I am today,” Arrieta reflected. “Never give up on your dreams. We possess an immense reservoir of talent within our country, and there is ample space for all of us to shine together, break international boundaries, and achieve our ultimate goals.”
