The two Left parties — Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India-Marxist [CPI(M)] — on Tuesday (September 8, 2026) separately announced their decisions to not take part in the second meeting of post-poll allies convened by the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on September 9.

Speaking to The Hindu, CPI(M) state secretary P. Shanmugam told his party would not participate in the meeting. Further, he said his party’s outside support to the TVK in the Assembly would continue. Mr. Shanmugam said there is a proposal to evolve a common-minimum-programme by the TVK and its allies and the CPI(M) would share its views.

Later in the day, in a statement, CPI State secretary M. Veerapandian said his party would not participate in the meeting, but would continue to offer outside support to the TVK.

Last week, Ministers N. Anand, Aadhav Arjuna, C.T.R Nirmal Kumar and Rajmohan visited the offices of the CPI and CPI(M) inviting them to participate in the meeting of the parties supporting the TVK.
