Heavy monsoon rains battered large parts of the country on Wednesday (July 8, 2026), triggering flash floods and widespread disruption to rail and road traffic, with 16 people feared trapped under a collapsed garbage mound in Maharashtra’s Pimpri Chinchwad and several parts of Delhi and Mumbai reeling under waterlogging.
A three-storey under-construction house in Delhi’s Rohini collapsed on Wednesday evening, trapping several people.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel to review the situation arising from heavy rains in the two states, officials said. During separate phone conversations with the Chief Ministers, Mr. Shah assured them of all possible assistance from the Centre in dealing with the rain-related situation.

Meanwhile, the sub-Himalayan districts of West Bengal are bracing for very heavy rain during the next two days and heavy rain thereafter till July 13, raising the possibility of landslides in the hills and inundation of low-lying areas in the plains. The IMD said that heavy to very heavy rain will occur over Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar till Friday morning, with extremely heavy downpour at one or two places on Wednesday.
