A rescue operation continues after 15 children were among 67 people that have been recovered after a ferry sunk off the coast of Guyana, with dozens remaining missing

Sixty-seven people have been rescued and dozens are missing after a ferry carrying 116 passengers and 17 crew sunk.

Fifteen children are among those recovered after the MV Barima capsized off the coast of Guyana, according to local officials.

The boat was travelling from the capital Georgetown on Saturday when a distress call was received at 11.03pm local time.

This triggered a search operation involving government teams and privately-owned boats, Public Works Minister Juan Edghill said.

He said that emergency teams continued their search on Sunday afternoon. "We're hopeful we'll be able to account for all that were on board."

Prime Minister Mark Phillips said that those rescued also included 41 men and 11 women, with the boat's captain among that number.

The captain has now returned to the area to assist the "significantly increased" rescue operation, with crews more than doubling their search area on Sunday.

Phillips confirmed that the boat was within its weight capacity at the time of the incident, with it licensed to hold more than 300 passengers.

Once medical checks and rescue operations are complete the names of those onboard will be released.
