Your takeout app might soon be handling all your grocery runs, too. DoorDash, the largest food delivery service in the US, is planning to acquire grocery delivery service Instacart in a massive $17 billion deal, DoorDash announced on Thursday.

Teaming up with a grocery delivery service may have been the next expected move for DoorDash, as just last month, the food delivery service announced that it now offers same-day delivery from every Costco in the US.

“Grocery is one of the hardest things to get right online,” Tony Xu, co-founder and CEO of DoorDash, said in a press release. “Someone has to pick a ripe avocado, find a substitute you’d choose yourself, and get the ice cream to you before it melts. Instacart has spent years learning to do that well for grocers, while DoorDash has built a delivery network and technology that local stores rely on every day. Together, we could give stores of every size more of those tools and unlock the potential of grocery delivery.”

According to DoorDash, once the deal is complete, both delivery services will continue to operate on separate platforms, and the Instacart name will remain. If you’re a DashPass and Instacart Plus subscriber, you will only have to pay one membership fee for perks from both platforms.

Should the deal move forward, it’s not expected to close before late 2027.

DoorDash’s recent settlement

In early 2026, the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection accused DoorDash and its competitor, Uber Eats, of failing to pay delivery drivers fairly for their work.

In September, DoorDash announced that it had reached a $131.5 million settlement.

“Simply put, we screwed up,” DoorDash said in a statement. “Our mistakes meant some Dashers were underpaid or paid late. While these mistakes weren’t intentional, that doesn’t make them OK.”
