by Flagpictures.orgEcuador exported US$37.2 billion worth of products around the world in 2025.
That dollar total reflects a 41.4% upturn compared to $26.3 billion five years earlier during 2021.
Year over year, the total value of Ecuadorean exports improved by 7.9% from $34.4 billion in 2024.
Ecuador’s official currency is US dollars.
Comprising its leading customers, the top 5 importers for Ecuadorean exported products were the United States of America, Panama, mainland China, Netherlands and Spain. Collectively, that international group of customers purchased nearly three-fifths (59.6%) of Ecuador’s overall exports in 2025 as measured by dollar value.
Viewed from a continental lens, over one-quarter (28.4%) of Ecuador’s exports by value was delivered to Latin America excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean countries.
Meanwhile, 25.2% was sold to importers in Europe; Ecuador shipped another 24.9% worth of goods to buyers in Asia.
Smaller percentages went to customers in North America (20.9%), Africa (0.4%) then Oceania (0.2%) led by New Zealand and Australia.
Given Ecuador’s population of 18,1 million people, its total US$37.2 billion in 2025 exports translates to some $2,050 for every resident in the South American nation. That per-capita amount surpasses the $1,900 dollar average one year earlier in 2024.

Countries Driving Ecuador’s Largest Trade Deficits
As defined by Investopedia, a country whose total value of all imported goods is higher than its value of all exports is said to have a negative trade balance or deficit.
It would be unrealistic for any exporting nation to expect across-the-board positive trade balances with all its importing partners. Similarly, that export country doesn’t necessarily post a negative trade balance with each individual partner with which it exchanges exports and imports.
- mainland China: -US$2.5 billion (country-specific trade deficit in 2024)
- United States: -$2.3 billion
- Colombia: -$1.1 billion
- Brazil: -$1 billion
- Argentina: -$577.9 million
- South Korea: -$540.9 million
- India: -$422.3 million
- Mexico: -$322.6 million
- Bolivia: -$229.4 million
- Japan: -$214.7 million
Among Ecuador’s trading partners that cause the greatest negative trade balances, Ecuadorean deficits with mainland China (up 108.3%), Argentina (up 66.6%) and India (up 59.6%) grew at the fastest pace from 2024 to 2025.
These cashflow deficiencies clearly indicate Ecuador’s competitive disadvantages with the above countries, but also represent key opportunities for Ecuador to develop country-specific strategies to strengthen its overall position in international trade.
Countries Behind Ecuador’s Best Trade Surpluses
Ecuador posted a total US$4.5 billion trade surplus for 2025, falling by -8.6% compared to $4.93 billion in black ink one year earlier in 2024.
Based on Investopedia’s definition of net importer, a country whose total value of all imported goods is lower than its value of all exports is said to have a positive trade balance or surplus.
Ecuador earned a subtotal $11.9 billion trade surplus with the following countries.
- Panama: US$6.3 billion (country-specific trade surplus in 2024)
- Netherlands: $1.4 billion
- Russia: $854.8 million
- Malaysia: $784.9 million
- Belgium: $581.3 million
- Switzerland: $519.7 million
- Spain: $507.1 million
- Finland: $350.6 million
- Italy: $331 million
- France: $297.9 million
Among Ecuador’s trading partners that generate the greatest positive trade balances, Ecuadorean surpluses with Finland (up 229.3%), Switzerland (up 55.4%) and the Netherlands (up 53.7%) grew at the fastest pace from 2024 to 2025.
In addition, Ecuador transitioned from a -$100.8 million deficit in 2024 to earning the $331 million surplus listed above.
The listed positive cashflow streams clearly indicate Ecuador’s competitive advantages with the above countries, but also represent key opportunities for Ecuador to develop country-specific strategies to optimize its overall position in international trade.
