Emma Raducanu was recently given an interesting draw for the Miami Open, but the British No. 1 and 2021 US Open winner has suffered another disappointing setback

Emma Raducanu will sit out the forthcoming Miami Open, where she made it to the quarter-finals 12 months ago. The British star, seeded 24th in Florida, had been due to face either Sonay Kartal or Peyton Stearns in her opening match on Thursday or Friday.

However, Express Sport understands Raducanu has yet to fully shake off the viral illness she contracted during the Middle Eastern swing of competitions. A chest infection also hampered her performance during last month's final in Cluj.

This marks the second occasion in three years Raducanu has withdrawn from the tournament, having previously pulled out in 2024 due to a lower back problem. The setback will frustrate her, particularly after recently progressing to the third round at Indian Wells, before suffering a 6-1, 6-1 defeat to Wimbledon finalist Amanda Anisimova.

The British No 1 was below peak fitness when she fell to Anisimova at the WTA 1000 tournament in California. Raducanu faces dropping 215 ranking points after missing the Miami Open, having reached the quarter-finals in 2025, reports the Express.

Raducanu has signed up for the WTA 500 tournament in Linz, an indoor clay-court competition, scheduled for April 6 to 12. She will miss Britain's Billie Jean King Cup qualifier match in Australia during that same period.

The world No. 23 looked strong in her opening match in Indian Wells, defeating qualifier Anastasia Zakharova 6-1 6-3. However, she only lasted 52 minutes on court against sixth seed Anisimova.

Following the match, Raducanu stated: "When I'm playing someone who's at the top like that, I think they have an extra 10 miles an hour on their serve than me.

"If I'm not feeling it, that gap feels more evident in terms of weight of shot, in terms of power. You just feel a little bit behind and your punches aren't landing as much as theirs are.

"I need to be aggressive when playing those players, but I think there's still a long way to go to be doing that. I need to use my strengths and probably mix it up a bit more."

Raducanu is also still without a full-time coach after parting ways with Francisco Roig in January and is not actively seeking one. She collaborated with Mark Petchey in Indian Wells, but their informal arrangement is now uncertain following her Miami withdrawal.

After her exit at Indian Wells, she said: "Mark helped me out a lot this week and it was nice to be on court with him again. But he will be commentating for Tennis Channel this week, probably until the end, so I don't know how much time I will get with him before Miami."
