Neon has released the first trailer for All of a Sudden, the newest film from Japanese auteur Ryusuke Hamaguchi

The film follows “Director of a care facility for the elderly, Marie-Lou strives to introduce an innovative care philosophy based on listening and respecting residents’ dignity, despite resistance from part of her staff. Her encounter with Mari, a Japanese theatre director battling cancer, will profoundly reshape her path. By forming a deep, supportive friendship, the two women join forces in a shared struggle to make the impossible possible.”

The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, receiving critical praise; the film’s co-leads, Virginie Efira (Benedetta, Elle) and Tao Okamoto (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Wolverine), shared the award for Best Actress.

The film is directed by one of Japan’s most acclaimed directors, Ryusuke Hamaguchi. He is best known for his Oscar-winning drama, Drive My Car, as well as films such as Evil Does Not Exist, Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, Asako I & II, and Happy Hour. Hamaguchi also penned the film alongside co-writer Léa Le Dimna.

The film is also heading to several fall festivals, including the New York Film Festival on October 1st, as well as having its UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on October 10th.

It will be Japan’s entry for Best International Feature at the 2027 Academy Awards.

All of a Sudden will be released in US cinemas on November 25th; a UK release date is TBC.
