Anthony Canty won the Euromillions lottery jackpot days after saving the life of a police officer

A Euromillions winner who saved the life of a police officer just days before scooping the £1m jackpot has died in a suspected hit-and-run.

Father-of-two Anthony Canty, 39, was knocked off his bicycle in Tiptree, Essex, on 21 May and died in hospital four days later.

The water supply worker had given the police officer CPR when he collapsed on a bus in April 2020, and netted the huge lottery prize shortly after.

Essex Police said the driver of a Ford KA, 18, was arrested in connection with the collision and later released under investigation.

He allegedly fled the scene in Maldon Road after the incident at 06:30 BST, while Canty was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Officers located the driver and initially arrested him on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink or drugs and failing to stop.

"He remains under investigation and our enquiries continue," a police spokesman said, as he appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Canty, who scooped the prize with partner Katie Sullivan, vowed not to give up his day job

Canty, from Maldon, won the Euromillions prize with his partner, Katie Sullivan, on 5 May 2020, days after his Good Samaritan deed.

The couple were pictured spraying champagne in celebration while holding their giant cheque, and Canty vowed not to give up his day job.

Police said anyone with CCTV or dash cam footage of the collision should get in touch.
