After suffering a serious tibia and fibula fracture during Canada’s first win in the 2026 men’s FIFA World Cup match on Thursday in Vancouver, Ismaël Koné’s surgery has been called a “success” by coach Jesse Marsch. “The doctor said it went perfectly, and Ismaël’s already been up this morning,” Jesse Marsch said during a press conference on Friday afternoon, “he sent a video message to the guys. So, everything’s gone well.” Although Ismaël will not be able to participate for the remainder of the World Cup, Marsch remains confident in the team’s capabilities. “We're gonna have to figure out how to use all of our players to get the best out of each game and help fill in the void of what Ismaël has meant to the team, which has been many, many things. He's been an incredible player, maybe our best player in the tournament so far and then and he's also a big personality in the group. So we'll manage it, but it won't be easy.” Marsch said. “In World Cup history there’s never been such a dominant performance. That’s the truth,” He added.
