'Feeling Fine', Wangchuk seeks temporary release to join Parliament march

Sonam Wangchuk feels well and seeks temporary hospital release to join the protest march.

NEW DELHI: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on Monday sought temporary release from Safdarjung Hospital to participate in the "Sansad Chalo" march to Parliament, saying in a handwritten letter that he was "feeling very fine" and that his health parameters were "quite normal.

"Addressing the director and medical superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, Wangchuk wrote: "I am feeling very fine today and my health parameters are also showing as quite normal. Hence I request you to kindly allow me to leave the hospital, even if temporarily, so that I can join the March to the Parliament – Sansad Chalo – this morning.""I shall be most grateful," he added in the letter dated July 20.The letter was shared on Wangchuk's official X handle along with a message questioning why he continued to remain in hospital."Sonam Wangchuk is trying hard to see you all! Just submitted a letter to the hospital as his health is good and they claim he is not in detention. So why the restrictions?" the post said. However, the hospital maintained that despite stable vital signs, Wangchuk continues to require uninterrupted medical care following his prolonged fast.In a health bulletin, issued on Monday morning, VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital said Wangchuk continues to receive comprehensive medical care and that his vital parameters remain stable, but his blood parameters continue to warrant close clinical observation.

The hospital said Wangchuk remains under continuous medical management and the close supervision of a multidisciplinary team of experts.Based on the clinical assessment of doctors from VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS, New Delhi, continued medical intervention and uninterrupted clinical monitoring remain necessary to ensure early detection and timely management of any potential complications. It added that Wangchuk is receiving all required medical care and that his clinical condition continues to be closely monitored by the multidisciplinary team. The latest development comes amid a continuing standoff over Wangchuk's hospitalisation. While the activist has sought permission to attend the Parliament march, doctors have consistently maintained that the physiological stress and systemic effects of his prolonged fast make continued hospitalisation medically necessary despite his stable condition.

Would you consider participating in a protest march like Sansad Chalo for climate action?

Absolutely, I am passionate about climate issues. No, I prefer other ways to advocate.
