Chief Samuel Crowfoot of Siksika First Nation joined Global News to provide an update on the Siksika polling station, after its closing was delayed over an hour and a half by high voter turnout. “I think that's reflective of the interest that our First Nations people has, in this referendum process,” Crowfoot said, “There's a big focus in getting our voice out and heard. And, you know, special shout out to our people for showing up in mass for, standing up and taking a chance to have your voices heard. That's important.” When asked to expand on the challenges he saw today, Chief Samuel Crowfoot said that Elections Alberta “did not allocate us the proper amount of ballots. People were forced to wait hours in line. Some had to leave and come back.” “People take time off of work and or school or their babysitters or transportation. The fact of the matter is that there are barriers - special barriers - when it comes to, carrying out these civic functions in rural communities. And Siksika is not immune to that.” He added.
