B.C. forest giant Interfor is relocating its head office from Burnaby to Georgia, as the lumber industry faces weak markets and higher U.S. tariffs. Founded in the 1960s, Interfor grew from a single B.C. mill into a major North American lumber producer. Jock Finlayson, chief economist for the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association (ICBA), explains that most of Interfor’s business is “in the United States now, which I think sort of helps to explain the move.” Economists warn that without a stronger commitment from the B.C. government, Interfor may not be the only forestry company looking south.
