Former Director General of Police V. Vaikunth passed away here on Friday. He was 89.

In his career spanning over 35 years, Vaikunth served the Tamil Nadu police in various capacities. He served as the DGP of Tamil Nadu in 1995. He was a recipient of the President’s Police Medal for meritorious and distinguished service. 

Vaikunth is the author of the book ‘An Eye to Indian Policing — Challenge & Response’ which was published in both English and Tamil. Post-retirement, he was engaged in social and community service works focusing more on rehabilitation programmes for women prisoners and juvenile delinquents.

He was an alumnus of P.S. High School, Vivekananda College, and Madras University.
