Multiple people have been left seriously injured after a coach struck a building and bus stop on a popular street in Spain.

The vehicle was travelling in the province of Lleida, Catalonia, at around 7:15am local time when the collision occurred, sparking a massive emergency response.

Of the 46 people treated, four are said to be critically injured, nine are less seriously injured and 33 had only minor injuries, according to local reports. The coach is believed to have been carrying 55 passengers.

It was travelling from Lleida to La Granja d'Escarp when it crashed on the popular Rambla Ferran - one of the city's most popular streets featuring a pedestrian-friendly boulevard with shops, apartment buildings and 19th-century architecture.

The road remains closed while police, paramedics and fire crews continue to attend to passengers, Spanish newspaper Diari Segre reports.

Images from the scene show the coach tilted forward with significant damage to its front, with multiple firefighters and police officers gathered beside a cordon.

President of the Government of Catalonia, Salvador Illa, said he was grateful for the efforts of the emergency services and had been in contact with the mayor for further details about the crash.

"I just spoke with the mayor [...] to get the latest information about the bus accident in Lleida," he said in a post on X.

"I wish a speedy recovery to all the injured people. All our support to those affected and their families. My gratitude to the emergency teams working on it."

President of the Parliament of Catalonia, Josep Rull, also wished the injured passengers a speedy recovery.

"Parliament conveys its support and affection to the people injured in the bus accident that took place this morning on Rambla Ferran in Lleida," Rull said in a post on X.

"We wish them a speedy recovery. And our gratitude, once again, to the work of the emergency and security services."
