In a solid start to the second quarter, Canada’s economy grew 0.5% in April after a weaker than expected start to the year that raised some concerns Canada had entered a recession. Desjardins Economist, LJ Valencia believes, “It really should put an end to the speculation that Canada is in a recession.” While today’s data may help to calm some nerves, uncertainty over the future of the Canada-U.S. trade deal, and its impact on growth, remains. “This sort of persistent uncertainty and tariffs in general are a significant downside risk to economic activity,” Valencia said.
