Gurdeep Singh, who returned from Germany for his brother Surjit Singh’s funeral in Satauda, died in a Kurukshetra road crash

A 60-year-old man who had travelled from Germany to attend his elder brother’s funeral died in a road accident in Haryana’s Kurukshetra district on Wednesday night.

The deceased, identified as Gurdeep Singh of Satauda village in Pehowa, was returning home in a Scorpio vehicle when the accident occurred near Jalbehra village on the Hisar-Chandigarh National Highway-152. According to police, the vehicle reportedly went out of control after hitting a pothole and crashed into the road divider.

The car crash was so severe that the front portion of the Scorpio was completely damaged and the vehicle spun nearly 90 degrees after the collision. Gurdeep Singh, who was driving, died on the spot.

Jagvinder Singh, a resident of the same village who was travelling with him, sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital. Dr Amit Arora later confirmed that Jagvinder Singh also succumbed to his injuries.

Police shifted the bodies for post-mortem examination and initiated an investigation into the incident.

Family members said Gurdeep Singh had been living in Germany for the past 30-35 years and had acquired German citizenship. He had arrived in Satauda village just a day earlier after learning about the death of his elder brother Surjit Singh, a former village head, who passed away on February 23. Gurdeep Singh had attended the funeral on Wednesday.

After the cremation, he travelled with Jagvinder Singh to a village near Devigarh in Patiala district to visit his in-laws. The accident occurred while he was returning to Satauda later in the day.

Surjit Singh’s widow, Surjit Kaur, is currently serving as the village head of Satauda. Police said further investigation is underway.
