He’s as cuddly as a cactus and as charming as an eel—and he’s returning to our screens! Nearly 26 years after its release, How the Grinch Stole Christmas is reportedly getting a sequel from Universal and Imagine Entertainment.

Even better news, Jim Carrey is in talks to reprise his role as the classic Dr. Seuss character, according to The Hollywood Reporter, with Ron Howard in discussions to direct the sequel and produce alongside his Imagine Entertainment partner, Brian Grazer.

The untitled sequel has also already found its writers in Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel, who were behind the HBO sitcom Curb Your Enthusiasm. The trio also penned the 2003 Seuss adaptation of The Cat in the Hat starring Mike Myers.

What a How the Grinch Stole Christmas sequel will look like remains a mystery. After all, the original live-action movie ended on a heartwarming note, with the Grinch returning the stolen gifts to the Whos and holding a feast with them.

It’s also unclear if Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen) or any other characters, like the Grinch’s crush Martha May Whovier (Christine Baranski), will return for the sequel.

Then there’s the question of how the Grinch himself will look. Carrey infamously spent around eight hours a day in make-up for the live-action movie, recalling the process as “excruciating” and revealing to Vulture last year that he wanted to quit on day one of production. Carrey also told ComicBook.com last year that he would be interested in playing the Grinch again, on the condition he was able to do it with motion capture rather than makeup.

We have no idea how this sequel is going to work, but with both director Ron Howard and star Jim Carrey potentially returning, we’re excited to find out.
