Indian information technology (IT) companies drastically reduced fresh applications for H-1B visas for the US FY27 (which runs from October 1, 2026, to September 30, 2027), according to immigration lawyers. The reduction is due to an astronomical surge in fees brought in by the Donald Trump administration last year and changes to the lottery system that favoured employees with higher salary levels, prompting companies to slam the brakes on a long-used system.
