Dashcam footage captured the moment the woman used her walking stick to halt the toddler in his tracks as he dashed towards oncoming traffic

A hero woman used her walking stick to save a toddler from traffic as he runs head first towards oncoming cars.

Dashcam footage caught the moment Rebecca Cooper helped the young boy as he could have been hit by traffic in Melbourne’s southwest.

Cooper was on her way to buy a lottery ticket on Morris Road in Hoppers Crossing when the youngster came rushing around the corner.

The driver could be heard saying “Why is there a small child?” before Cooper could be heard demanding "wait, stop, stop, stop" before opening her car door.

As Cooper suffers with Multiple sclerosis (MS) and Crohn's disease she relied on her walking stick and was unable to run out of the car.

However, she managed to use her stick to stop the child and grab him into her arms.

She told 7News: “He was so fast, he had that run, like he was forward-facing and he was just off.

“I couldn’t run because I have a walking stick, so I got out (of the car) and I just then just grabbed my walking stick and used it to pull the poor little kid in.”

The woman said that she usually "hates" using her walking stick but was grateful for it in this moment as “it came in handy”.

Shortly after the incident the boy's mum followed after him, and was reunited safely with her son.

Cooper added that it was a whirlwind incident and the mum didn't even have a chance to say thank you.

She said: “She was pretty distraught.

“I think she was just thinking ‘I’ve got my child back’ because she really grabbed him.”
