The problem
You can really love your plants and still be rewarded with crispy, brown leaf tips. While they won’t kill your plant, they aren’t aesthetically pleasing.

The hack
The tidy-up is simple: cut off the dry, brown parts of the leaf. The plant looks instantly better, and the theory is this does no harm because the tissue is already dead. But the worry is it will hurt the plant or make the browning worse.

The method
Use clean, sharp scissors and cut along the leaf’s natural shape. Leave a thin sliver of the brown edge rather than cutting into the healthy green tissue, which would create a fresh wound that the plant then has to seal off, causing it to go brown again in the process.

The test
I trimmed the brown tips on a philodendron, following the leaf shape, and the leaves immediately looked neater and, over time, didn’t brown further along the cut. On an earlier attempt years ago, I cut back into the green part of the leaf and watched a new brown edge form within days.

The verdict
Cutting off crispy tips doesn’t hurt the plant, so long as you only remove dead tissue. But browning tips point to a bigger problem: usually inconsistent watering, low humidity or a buildup of minerals from tap water or excessive use of fertiliser. If the tips keep browning, the real fix lies in adapting your plant care, not the scissors.
