If you’re planning a trip, one of the most common questions is:
“What actually happens on the day of a shark cage diving experience?
At African Shark Eco-Charters, we’ve designed our trips to be safe, structured, and unforgettable — while still feeling relaxed, personal, and immersive.
From the moment you arrive in Simon’s Town to the moment you return to shore, here’s exactly how your shark cage diving experience works.
Why Our Shark Cage Diving Experience Is Different
Not all shark cage diving experiences are the same — and one of the biggest differences comes down to comfort, safety, and time spent underwater.
Scuba Hookah System (Stay Underwater Longer)
Unlike many operators where you need to hold your breath, we use a surface-supplied scuba system (hookah system).
What this means for you:
- You can breathe normally underwater
- Spend your full 20-minute dive submerged
- Enjoy longer, more relaxed shark encounters
- Never feel rushed or panicked
This creates a far more immersive, comfortable, and safe experience, especially for first-time divers.
Small, Personal Groups
We limit our trips to a maximum of 12 guests, ensuring:
- More time in the cage
- Better viewing opportunities
- Personal attention from our crew
Safety-First Approach
Everything we do is built around shark cage diving safety, including:
- Detailed safety briefings
- Experienced crew
- Structured dive procedures
More Than Just a Dive
This is not just a shark experience — it’s a full marine adventure, including seals, dolphins, penguins, and whales.
1. Arrival at Our Shark Centre in Simon’s Town
Your day begins at our shop in Simon’s Town.
When you arrive:
- You’ll be welcomed by our crew (meet and greet)
- Enjoy tea and coffee before departure
- Get comfortable and settled for the trip
We keep our environment relaxed and friendly so you feel at ease from the start.
2. Wetsuit Fitting & Safety Briefing
Before heading out, we prepare you properly — this is where your shark cage diving safety journey begins.
You’ll be:
- Measured and fitted into your wetsuit
- Introduced to the equipment
Your safety briefing covers:
- What to do (and not do) in the shark cage
- How to position yourself safely
- Where safety equipment is located
- What to expect during your dive
This ensures you feel confident, informed, and ready before getting on the boat.
3. Departure & Boat Ride to the Dive Site
Once everyone is ready, we depart from Simon’s Town harbour.
- The boat ride is approximately 25 minutes
- You’ll enjoy scenic views of False Bay
This is where the anticipation starts to build.
4. Arrival at the Dive Site & Cage Setup
At the dive site:
- The boat anchors in a carefully selected location
- The shark cage is lowered into the water
- Bait lines are deployed in a controlled and ethical way
Everything is done with a strong focus on safety, structure, and respect for the sharks.
5. Your Shark Cage Diving Experience
Now for the highlight — getting into the cage.
How your dive works:
- Each guest is allocated approximately 20 minutes in the cage
- You are guided by our crew at all times
- Using our scuba hookah system, you can remain underwater comfortably
- You can lift your head above water at any time
Sharks you may see:
- Bronze whaler sharks
- Broadnose sevengill cow sharks
These sharks are powerful, curious, and incredible to observe — all within a safe, controlled environment.
6. Seal Island & Marine Wildlife Experience
After everyone has completed their dive, the experience continues.
We take a scenic trip around Seal Island.
What you’ll see:
- Thousands of Cape fur seals
- Often African penguins
On the way back, we frequently encounter:
- Dolphins
- Whales, including:
- Southern right whales
- Bryde’s whales
This makes your trip a complete marine safari — not just a dive.
7. Return to Harbour
We then head back to Simon’s Town harbour.
- Total experience duration: approximately 3.5 hours
- You’ll leave with a completely new perspective on sharks and the ocean
8. Trip Times & Important Information
We offer both morning and afternoon trips.
Important to note:
- Exact times are confirmed the day before
- Times may change based on weather and sea conditions
- Flexibility is essential to ensure safety and the best experience
