Rajasthan Royals were forced into a major leadership change ahead of their crucial IPL 2026 encounter against Gujarat Titans at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Friday. Regular captain Riyan Parag was not seen coming at the toss, with young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal stepping in as stand-in skipper for the first time in the tournament.

The absence of Parag quickly became one of the biggest talking points before the match, especially considering the importance of the fixture in the race for the top spot on the points table. Fans on social media were left surprised after seeing Jaiswal walk out for the toss instead of Parag, triggering widespread speculation about the Royals captain’s availability.

Why Riyan Parag is not playing RR vs GT match?

Speaking at the toss, Jaiswal confirmed that Parag had sustained a hamstring injury during Rajasthan Royals’ previous game. The injury forced the all-rounder to miss his first match of the IPL 2026 season. Jaiswal, however, sounded optimistic about Parag’s recovery and hinted that the skipper could return soon.

“Riyan pulled his hamstring in the last game, so I feel he’ll be back soon,” Jaiswal said during the toss presentation.

Parag has been a key figure for Rajasthan Royals this season, contributing both as a middle-order batter and as captain. His aggressive approach and calm leadership have played an important role in RR’s successful campaign so far. Losing him for a high-pressure contest against Gujarat Titans was undoubtedly a setback for the Jaipur-based franchise.

Yashasvi Jaiswal handed captaincy responsibility

With Parag unavailable, Rajasthan Royals entrusted the captaincy duties to Jaiswal. The young Indian batter, regarded as one of the brightest stars in Indian cricket, led the side for the first time in the IPL. The moment marked another milestone in Jaiswal’s rapidly growing career. Despite his young age, the left-handed opener has already established himself as one of the most dependable batters in the tournament.

Winning the toss in his first outing as captain, Jaiswal elected to bowl first against Gujarat Titans, hoping to make use of the evening conditions in Jaipur.

Team changes for RR and GT

Rajasthan Royals made two changes to their playing XI for the clash. Shimron Hetmyer and Yash Punja were brought into the side in place of Parag and Nandre Burger.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans also made a notable change, bringing back pacer Prasidh Krishna into the lineup. Led by Shubman Gill, GT entered the contest aiming to strengthen their position in the playoff race.
