Sources have confirmed that Jason Clarke, star of First Man, Pet Semetary and Oppenheimer, is in talks to take on a role in Heat 2, the Michael Manndirected sequel to the original 1995 action flick.

The film sequel will be an adaptation of Mann’s 2022 New York Times Bestselling novel of the same title, which was co-written by Meg Gardiner, serving as both a prequel and a sequel, which covers the foundation years of Vincent Hanna, a detective, and Neil McCauley and Chris Shiherlis, two criminals. Additionally, the book narrates events after the film ends in its prologue. There are yet to be direct confirmations of Clarke’s casting and which role he will take.

A sequel film version of Heat was teased back in 2019, with the director sharing ideal casting and ideas for the film. April 2023 saw official confirmation that the film was happening, with Mann writing and directing, and after a sea of casting rumours, Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale were added as names likely to be starring in the project.

Mann’s first film starred an ensemble powerhouse including Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Tom Sizemore, Diane Venora, Amy Brenneman, Ashley Judd, Mykelti Williamson, Wes Studi, Ted Levine, Jon Voight, and Val Kilmer. It focused on a psychological cat-and-mouse game between Pacino’s Hanna and De Niro’s McCauley, spiralling into a dismantling of both parties’ lives.

Heat banked $187.4 million worldwide from a budget of $60 million and earned critical acclaim (84% on Rotten Tomatoes from 154 reviews and a 76 out of 100 Metacritic score from 22 critics). It is now celebrated as one of the crime genre’s greatest, alongside The Godfather, Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction and Chinatown.
