According to official sources, the training’s opening ceremony was held in Korla city, Xinjiang, China. The main objective of this training is to focus on joint counterterrorism operations in high-altitude areas, according to China’s Ministry of National Defense.
The nine-day exercise encompassed a range of operational and tactical training activities that are significant not only for bilateral military cooperation but also in the context of a changing regional security environment.
Bilateral military exercises between Pakistan and China are a well-established and recurring feature of their defense cooperation. The two countries conducted the Sea Guardian IV naval exercise earlier this year to enhance interoperability and maritime cooperation. Joint counterterrorism drills are also a constant feature of their defense cooperation, with the previous example being Warrior IX held in December 2025.
Karakoram 2026 particularly focused on joint counterterrorism in high-altitude areas, with “skills training in UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle] operation, on-the-move target search and firing, and long-range sniping, and joint command and live-force exercises,” according to a Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson.
China Central Television’s military channel said that China provided all the equipment, including Type 191 rifles, Type 201 squad machine guns, Type 11 armored assault vehicles, Type 08 infantry fighting vehicles, artillery, and both unmanned and anti-unmanned systems. The use of Chinese equipment and subsequent Pakistani familiarization with equipment could boost the likelihood of future Pakistani procurement.
However, the most notable feature of Karakoram 2026 is that this is the first time both countries are moving away from counterterrorism training by specialized units to regular army forces. This development will further strengthen defense cooperation and reinforce the broader all-weather strategic partnership between Pakistan and China. The main aim of this is to increase interoperability and joint cooperation on terrorism-related issues.
Karakoram 2026 is a reflection of broader convergence between China and Pakistan over shared security concerns in the region. Their respective threat perceptions may not be identical, but they have a shared interest in preventing terrorist organizations from exploiting territorial vulnerabilities. Beijing continues to have concerns about the potential for attacks in China, while Chinese nationals operating in Afghanistan and Pakistan have faced attacks on occasion. Joint counterterrorism training provides an institutional mechanism to translate these shared concerns into practical military cooperation.
One key component of these exercises was UAV operations. The motivation is obvious considering the emergence of drone warfare in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border region, especially the use of UAVs by terrorist outfits. Training in this domain will increase situational awareness while simultaneously supporting surveillance operations. At the same time, mobile target detection and engagement will strengthen coordination under dynamic battlefield conditions.
Long-range sniping and live-force exercises further test tactical proficiency, decision-making, and interoperability. For participating forces, this exercise would be helpful in coordinating response and improving communication during complex operations.
Looking at all the capabilities involved in Karakoram 2026, it is evident that the exercises were specially designed in relevance to the difficult terrain of northern Pakistan and the bordering Chinese region of Xinjiang. The China-Pakistan border region has difficult, mountainous terrain with extreme weather conditions complicating security operations. However, one should not perceive these exercises as evidence of China and Pakistan preparing for a specific operation in the region. Rather, Karakoram 2026 is significant mainly due to improved preparedness for shared counterterrorism contingencies and strengthening military-to-military familiarity.
Another major dimension setting the scene for these exercises is the fraught security environment between Afghanistan and Pakistan, which has complicated Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts. Islamabad has repeatedly raised concerns about the presence of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants on Afghan territory and their ability to conduct cross-border attacks. For Pakistan, the recent surge in drone attacks especially by the militants across the border raises another challenge that needs to be addressed.
A 2026 report by the U.N. Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team documented escalating cross-border attacks involving Pakistan and Afghanistan and reported continued support for the TTP by Afghanistan’s de facto Taliban government. In this context, joint training in drone operations may help Pakistan improve both surveillance and defense. The value of such experience will greatly depend on whether the units and police forces bearing the brunt of these attacks, received practical training in counterdrone defense.
The biggest implication of Karakoram 2026, however, is not the specific training received; it is the institutionalization of cooperation. With air, naval, and now army training exercises, China and Pakistan have developed a framework covering all three services. Pakistan used Chinese platforms during the May 2025 conflict with India, and army-level interoperability is a natural and logical next step in defense cooperation.
Karakoram 2026 is not merely a military training but a broader reflection of evolving security priorities of China and Pakistan. With the resurgence of terrorist attacks, counterterrorism cooperation sits at the forefront of Islamabad’s national security concerns. On the other hand, Beijing remains heavily invested in Pakistan under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), and the security of Chinese nationals in Pakistan remains an important dimension of bilateral relations.
The deteriorating security environment in the region thus reinforces the importance of China-Pakistan military cooperation. The UAV-related training, coordination in command, and realistic field exercises at Karakoram 2026 can be understood against the broader need to improve situational awareness, tactical coordination, and responsiveness to emerging threats.
However, the effectiveness of military training cannot be measured solely by the completion of an exercise. Its lasting value will depend on the extent to which the participating forces incorporate lessons from joint training into their operational practices and adapt to emerging security challenges.
