(Bloomberg) — Kyiv marked a day of mourning on Friday for victims of a massive Russian missile and drone attack as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the death toll had risen to 30.

Zelenskyy said nearly 100 people were injured and 10 people were still missing as rescue teams continued to search buildings damaged in Thursday’s strike, the deadliest on the capital in almost a year.

“Reliable protection of Ukraine’s skies is needed as a prerequisite for diplomacy,” the president said in a post on the X platform. “We count on the support of our partners, above all with anti-ballistic capabilities.”

Ukraine downed just 17% of the high-speed Iskander-M ballistic missiles fired in the attack, according to a Bloomberg analysis of Ukrainian Air Force data. That was less than half the average interception rate recorded against the same missile type during large-scale barrages in previous months.

The Russian attack on Ukraine involved 74 missiles and 496 drones overall. The Defense Ministry in Moscow said the “massive strike” on Kyiv targeted military industry and energy complexes and were in response to Ukrainian attacks on Russia.

While Ukraine has become increasingly effective at downing Russian attack drones and slower cruise missiles, it relies largely on US-made Patriot air-defense systems to intercept ballistic missiles. The projectiles’ high speeds and steep trajectories leave defenders with only seconds to respond, making Patriot interceptors critical to protecting major cities.

With demand for air defenses surging worldwide amid the US and Israeli war with Iran, Ukraine has struggled to replenish its stockpiles of Patriots despite the willingness of Kyiv’s European allies to pay for them.

Zelenskyy said he’ll raise the issue of strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses when he visits the North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit in Ankara next week. In a video address late Thursday, he also urged Europe to develop its own anti-ballistic missile production.
