Several people are reported to be trapped following a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in Wayanad on Tuesday.

The landslide occurred near Meenakshi Bridge at Kalladi, where work on a road tunnel project connecting Malappuram and Wayanad districts is underway.

According to reports, local residents rescued at least three people from the site, where workers associated with the tunnel project were staying. Officials at the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) said that around five people were injured, and no casualties have been reported so far. A few vehicles that transport tunnel employees were also damaged in the landslide.

Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force based at Meenangadi have been deployed for the rescue operation.

Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheeshan convened an emergency meeting and instructed Minister T Siddique to coordinate rescue and relief operations. The Chief Minister also spoke to the Wayanad district collector to review the situation.

The Indian Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Wayanad on Tuesday, forecasting heavy rains.
